Best Moments: The Princess Diaries

Hey guys! I’ve got a day off at home today so I wanted to do a blog post for you all. With rumours running wild about whether or not there is going to be a third Princess Diaries film I thought it would be fun to chat about why I love the first two. Also, they were actually adapted from the book series of the same name written by Meg Cabot.

I think I have probably seen the second one the most but they are both so heart-warming and funny. I think everyone can remember a time when they didn’t feel like they quite fit in and Mia is a character who gains so much confidence and self-assurance across the two films, in the end becoming the Queen of Genovia!

So before I ramble on too much I am going to dive straight into my favourite moments across both films.

The Princess Diaries (2001)

Makeover Scene
Mia Thermopolis (Anne Hathaway) and Paolo (Larry Miller)

You broke my glasses” “You broke my brush

Who doesn’t love the makeover scene? I mean is it a bit ridiculous that Mia has to have a beauty makeover in order to be seen as a princess? Yes, I suppose. But everyone loves a good makeover scene in a teen film. The arrogant but kind Italian stylist, Paolo, and his two glamourous assistants take THIS and THIS and give you…“a princess.”

Baseball Scene
Mia Thermopolis (Anne Hathaway)

That’s alright, that’s okay, you’re gonna hit it anyway

This scene is hilarious, perfect and stamped all over with girl power. Mia finally gets her own back for the way she was treated by Josh and cheerleaders. We can see that Mia no longer feels the need to pretend to be something she’s not, after realising the truth in the idea that she is better than the popularity-obsessed highschoolers anyway. Go Mia!

Mias Speech
Mia Thermopolis (Anne Hathaway)

But now, I choose to be forever more, Amelia Mignonette Thermopolis Renaldi, Princess of Genovia

After deliberating throughout the whole film about her decision, realising who her true friends are and learning who her true self is, Mia decides to claim her position as a Princess of Genovia. She becomes a completely different person to the Mia we saw at the beginning. Now who will be her Prince?

Kissing Scene 2
Michael Moscovitz (Robert Schwartzman) and Mia Thermopolis (Anne Hathaway)
Kissing Scene 1a

Why me?” “Because you saw me when I was invisible

This is possibly the most iconic line of the film and it is so adorable! Mia finally gets her happy ending, foot pop and all. It is so perfect when all the twinkling lights in the garden come on and the water fountain starts running. And then Miracle’s Happen kicks in and you just want to cry with happiness! I also love the scene after this where we see all the characters dancing together and Mia does “the robot”. This shows that she is still the same old Mia. Also, I used to absolutely love Mia’s dress in these scenes!

The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement (2004)

Dancing Scene
Mia Thermopolis (Anne Hathaway) and Nicholas Devereaux (Chris Pine)

Step on my foot anytime

Yes it is sad that she isn’t with Michael in the second film, but we know she still talks to him and cares for him. Enter Nicholas Devereaux, a handsome newcomer who sweeps Mia of her feet at the ball. I also love her dress in this scene, perhaps slightly out there in its bright red colour, but still beautiful and I have always loved over the top princess gowns.

Mall Scene
Mia Thermopolis (Anne Hathaway) and Queen Clarisse Renaldi (Julie Andrews)

Okay…I have my own mall

I used to love watching this scene, I always looked forward to seeing it. It is just every teenage girls dream, a whole room at expensive clothes and sparkly things. I just wanted to be Mia! Plus the draws and cupboards required secret number codes on a remote in order to open them. I mean that’s just cool.

Kissing Scene 2
Mia Thermopolis (Anne Hathaway) and Nicholas Devereaux (Chris Pine)

I loathe you” “I loathe you” “I loathe you first

Although Lord Devereaux appears to be caught up in his uncle’s plans for him to steal the throne from Mia, his feelings for her may be the answer to both their problems. Shortly after this kiss they both fall into the fountain together which is so typically Mia and it makes for such a funny scene. Her reaction to kissing him is hilarious, like she genuinely didn’t realise what was happening.

End Scene
Mia Thermopolis (Anne Hathaway)

Presenting her majesty, Amelia Mignonette Thermopolis Renaldi, Queen of Genovia

Well this just completes such a well-developed character arc. Mia has gone from high school to princess and then on to becoming the queen. She has abolished the law that a princess must be married in order to assume the throne and she still has her handsome Prince. Such a wonderful ending!

I am unsure what is going on with this third film idea. I have seen news stories saying yes and some saying no. If anyone has anyway of shedding some light that would be great, so comment below. Also let me know what your favourite moments are!

Lots of love,
