Hey guys! So yesterday I was very excited to see that the first teaser for the final Hunger Games film had been released online. I couldn’t wait to watch it and after scrambling around looking for my headphones for about five minutes I finally clicked that play button.
I am a huge fan of The Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins. I think the first book in the series is probably one of my favourite books ever, I literally could not put it down. It’s so gripping and exciting and the characters are some of the best I have ever read.
Having already read the final book I know what will be included in Mockingjay Part 2, but that doesn’t take any excitement away from seeing what I pictured in my mind on the big screen. I think the creative teams who have worked on the film adaptations have done an amazing job recreating the world of the books.
I know there are lots of potential spoilers and that this is a highly anticipated film so I will stick to what is included in the actual teaser trailer.
The trailer begins with an effective juxtaposition between happy scenes of Finnick and Annie being reunited in marriage and a voice over from Katniss declaring the uncertainty of all their futures if President Snow remains undefeated.
“Nothing good is safe while Snow’s alive” – Katniss Everdeen
Finnick is one of my favourite characters and I love that they have decided to include his wedding. I think it is a necessary element to include in terms of understanding his character in the final book. He has been so unhappy for so long, so lost and tormented, feeling the absence of his true love. To see even a glimpse of their happiness suggests big changes for Finnick. However, the voice over also hints that this happiness may be short-lived which is upsetting and keeps us hooked for the rest of the trailer.
We see Effie looking a lot more herself in this trailer compared to Part 1. Her role in Part 1 deviates from the books slightly and she essentially takes the place of Fulvia Cardew, coming to District 13 to support Katniss. In this teaser though it appears that she has got her wigs and confident charm back, or at least some of it. Staying strong for the tributes was always part of Effie’s endearing nature. She is such an important character.
“Snow has to pay for what he’s done” – Katniss Everdeen
I think this trailer gives off the impression that the build-up is over: the staged propos, the motivational speeches, the undercover rescue missions and Snow’s twist game playing. This is it. This is where the characters have to take charge of their world or else lose it forever. There is so much at stake and Katniss Everdeen must take the lead. No more dressing up for the cameras, it is time to dress up for war.
Katniss wants to protect the ones she loves. Prim. Gale. Peeta. Her mother. Effie. Haymitch. Finnick. We have got to know all these amazing character across the past book and films. They are each very likable for different reasons and it has set up what is sure to be an emotionally effective finale.
*Actual gasp* It’s Brienne of Tarth! After discovering that Petyr Baelish (Aidan Gillen) is going to be in Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials (2015) it appears that Game of Thrones actors are taking over the YA adaptation scene. Since their character portrayals in GOT are so completely brilliant I don’t see how this can hurt.
We see a little of the action scenes in this teaser which builds more tension and excitement. Katniss has become a warrior and when you think back to her character at the start of the first book/film, the character development is very impressive!
I am so insanely excited to see Katniss and Peeta reunite. I think the representation of their feelings for each other is kind of like a thread which runs through the entire storyline. So, I think in their reunion they will find strength and this will fuel the fire of the rebellion yet more.
And yes that little whistle tune still gives us shivers down our spines.
That’s it for my trailer breakdown, I hope you enjoyed it and please let me know your thoughts on the final book/film!
Lots of love,
