What is the book/film about?
Insurgent continues to follow Tris on her journey as she attempts to navigate the corrupt society of factions in a futuristic Chicago. In Divergent we are introduced to the five different factions: Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), Abnegation (the selfless), Erudite (the intelligent) and Candor (the honest). Tris is Divergent which means she does not belong to just one category. Tris, Four, Caleb, Peter and Marcus escape from the grasp of Jeanine Matthews at the end of Divergent and travel to Amity to plan their next move. Racking with grief from the death of both her parents, Tris is tested to the limits of her strength as the group continue to make judgements on exactly which factions they can trust in the battle to bring down Jeanine…including the factionless.
My thoughts on the books
The Divergent trilogy is without a doubt my favourite book series ever. I love everything about it. Veronica Roth is a terrific writer who creates an exciting and action packed world.
I really enjoy the fact that the futuristic setting is not in a fictional place but in Chicago. You can imagine how the book has passed those times where technology was constantly developing, you can imagine the advanced technology used by the Erudite. The characters still have access to the technology and still make developments, but perhaps in a world that is no longer keeping itself together in the same way.
I love all the characters and I think the messages of strength and bravery are some of the most fundamental elements of the story. The storyline is original and I had no idea where Roth was going to take it in Allegiant (2013) but she kept ramping up the pace, excitement and action.
By the end of the series I really felt like I knew the characters really well. And I would definitely love to be cool enough to pull off being a member of Dauntless. As I’m sure we all would.
My thoughts on the final trailer
This trailer is so exciting. I think they have saved the best trailer until last. The eerie, whispering soundtrack at the beginning is spine chilling and has a ‘calm-before-the-storm’ sort of feeling. The first half of trailer continues in this deceptively serene way and it is pleasantly disconcerting because we know the characters are leading up to an intense fight.
We see Tris running across the fields of the Amity faction. Ever since her role as Hazel Grace in The Fault in Our Stars (2014) I have been a huge fan of Shailene Woodley and her work. In fact, I love the entire cast of this film because I think they all portray their characters perfectly. It is a little like a showcase of Hollywood’s freshest talent but that’s why it’s so brilliant. These young actors and actresses are excellent (you only need to look at clips of Miles Teller in Whiplash – 2014) so by putting them all together in one of the most highly anticipated young adult book to film adaptations of the year, you know it’s going to work.
“I think it’s cool to have a young heroine with short hair” – Shailene Woodley
Following her role as Hazel Grace, Woodley was reluctant to have her character in Insurgent where a wig. In an interview with BuzzFeed in 2014 she said “I think it’s cool to have a young heroine with short hair,” explaining that it makes the overall aesthetic “more modern.” Theo James, who plays Four, also told BuzzFeed that “now you get a character progression in a visual way,” explaining that it shows “maturity” and differentiates her from the first film.
In the trailer we see her reveal the new hair-do to Four and he obviously isn’t unpleased by it. The pair look so good together and they look ready to fight together.
In the next section we get a glimpse of Octavia Spencer’s character, Johanna, who is the leader of Amity. There are several new characters in this books which are going to be introduced in this new film, so that is very exciting. I am intrigued to see how they will be portrayed, but so far the casting and acting has been amazing.
I love how there is so much contrast between the colouring of the different factions. We see Peter addressing Four and Tris in Amity and they are all wearing washed out reds and blues and faded yellows. Then it cuts to show the Dauntless walking down some steps all dressed in strong, black combat outfits. I think they have got the design of the world spot on in my opinion.
The second half of the trailer gets faster paced and we see quick glimpses of so many characters we love as well as some of the new characters. “No pressure” says Peter in his sarcastic voice that in a way I can’t help but love. I think he is one of those characters he isn’t good or bad, he’s just caught up in the whole mess like everyone else.
This trailer is explosive and dynamic, it gives me chills and I am so excited to finally see the film next month. Please comment your opinions on anything from the books, film, actors etc. I would love to hear your thoughts.
